SAC to Hold 14th Annual Multicultural Conference

The 14th Annual Multicultural Conference at San Antonio College will be held April 22-24, featuring talks, dance, and literary readings on the theme "The Body Uncovered:  Determining the Core."  All events except the luncheon are free and open to the public and will be held in the Visual Arts and Technology Center, Room 120, unless otherwise noted. For more information, contact Juanita Luna Lawhn, Conference Coordinator and English Professor, at 733-2514.  The conference schedule follows:

Tuesday, April 22:

6-6:45 p.m. Reception (McAllister Auditorium Foyer)

7-9 p.m.  Opening Ceremonies (McAllister Auditorium): Welcome by San Antonio College President Robert E. Zeigler and English Department Chairperson Alex Bernal.  Introduction by Moumin Quazi (Tarleton State University) of topic ("The Contested Body: Uncovered, Cored and Scored"), unveiling of the journal "Voices" and presentations by Bana Ramanath (Director of San Antonio Natyanjali), Claudio San Miguel (San Antonio College), Lisa Garza (Atlanta, Georgia), and S. T. Shimi (Artistic Director for Company Programming, Jump-Start Performance Co.) "Triptych:  Three Selected Solos."

Wednesday, April 23:

9-9:50 a.m.  Jayne King (Northwest Vista College) on "Save the Last Dance for America: Inner City Bodies on the Edge," and Narcel Gerard Reedus (University of Texas at Arlington) on "Ezekiel¹s Dream."

10-10:50 a.m.  Chuck Taylor (Texas A&M University, College Station) on "Love¹s Body in Dagoberto Gilb," and Purvi Shah on "Sakhi for South Asia n Women" ­ poetry reading.

11-11:50 a.m. Erin Ranft (University of Texas at San Antonio) on "Venus is Young and Thin:  Science Fiction as an Agent for Discussion of the Body" and Moumin Quazi (Tarleton State University) on "The Diasporic Body and the Malady of Interpretation:  An Examination of Jhumpa Lahiri's Interpreter of Maladies."

2-3 p.m. Dance Workshop, by Lisa Suarez (Artistic Director and Guest Artist, Jump-Start Performance Co.) ­ "Zumbia:  A Latin Dance Cardio Workout." (Participants should wear comfortable clothes and shoes.)

6:30-9 p.m.  An Evening of Literary Selections:  Sheila Sanchez-Hatch, Carol Reposa (San Antonio College), Purvi Shah (Executive Director, Sakhi for South Asian Women), and Ned Bailey (San Antonio College), "Selections from
Chiaroscuro:  Travels in South Italy."

Thursday, April 24:

10:50 a.m. ­ 12:05 p.m.  Arch Mayfield (Wayland Baptist University) on "Pigment of the Imagination," Mario Marcel Salas (Northwest Vista College) on "Mestizaje: The De-Africanization and De-Indianization Process in Mexican Society with the Colonialist Heritage," and Juanita Luna Lawhn (San Antonio College) on "Mexicans Not Allowed:  Simon Says,You¹re Out!"

Main Ave.), reservations required ­733-0621.  Speaker Purvi Shah, Marymount Manhattan College, poet, writer, teacher, and executive director of Sakhi for South Asian Women, a community-based anti-domestic violence organization, on "Cord Cycles: The Body's Politic Etched in Migration and Memory."
