Pozner to Decode Reality TV’s Twisted Fairy Tales at SAC on March 3

Jennifer L. Pozner, Executive Director of Women in Media & News (WIMN), will discuss “Bachelor Babes, Bridezillas & Husband-Hunting Harems:  Decoding Reality TV’s Twisted Fairy Tales” at San Antonio College on March 3, 11 a.m. – Noon at the Visual Arts & Technology Center (corner of Dewey & Lewis streets) in Room 120.

This event, sponsored by Programs & Services for Women & Non-Traditional Students and the Office of Student Life, is free and open to the public.

Pozner will discuss why TV frames the humiliation of women as the “perfect fairy tale romance” in a humorous multi-media presentation that features the analysis of clips from shows like “The Bachelor,” “The Swan,” and “America’s Next Top Model.”  She explains how realty TV reinforces regressive stereotypes about women, men, love, marriage, sexuality and class in America while glorifying eating disorders and deriding female intelligence.

She is founder and executive director of Women in Media & News (WIMN), a women’s media analysis, education and advocacy organization dedicated to increasing women’s presence and power in the public debate.  Pozner formerly directed the Women’s Desk at the national media watch group FAIR, where she was a staff writer for Extra! magazine and the organizer of the national Feminist Coalition on Public Broadcasting.  She was the Media Watch columnist and contributing media editor for Sojourner:  The Women’s Forum.

Her writing has appeared in numerous publications and anthologies, and she has been a commentator on many television shows, such as MSNBC’s “Scarborough Country,” Comedy Central’s “Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” Pacifica Radio’s “Democracy Now!” among many others.  She has worked with women’s human rights groups MADRE and Women for Afghan Women.  Pozner graduated from Hampshire College in 1996 with a concentration in journalism, media criticism and women’s studies.  She received the Soroptimist International of NYC’s 2007 “Making a Difference for Women Award.”
