SAC Women’s Center Offers Scholarships to Area Residents:
Application Deadline Extended to September12

San Antonio College’s Programs & Services for Women & Non-Traditional Students is offering scholarships of $1,250 ($625 each for Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 semesters) for residents living in the 78212 zip code areas who meet the scholarship criteria.  The priority deadline for applications is August 8.
 
The scholarship program is designed to enhance student’s leadership skills while helping them pay for college expenses such as childcare, books, and transportation. Scholarship recipients will serve as a mentor to participants of the Mi CASA (Career Advancement & Self-sufficiency Assistance) Program.  
 
The Mi CASA Program serves low-to-moderate income residents who live in the Tobin Hill, Alta Vista, Beacon Hill, and Five Points neighborhoods.  Services offered include career development, employability skill development, homebuyer education training, computer guidance, financial literacy, and more.
 
To qualify for the scholarship, students must enroll for a minimum of six credit hours each semester, have a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA, submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid Form (FAFSA), meet ACCD scholarship requirements, be a resident of the 78212 zip code area enroll in the Mi CASA Program, and participate in training workshops and peer mentoring activities.  In addition to a completed application, students should submit a letter of recommendation from an employer, professor or counselor, proof of residency in the 78212 zip code area (such as a utility bill or lease agreement), and a minimum 200-word essay. An interview is also required.
 
A grant from the Greater Texas Foundation provides funds for the Mi CASA scholarships for the 2008-2009 academic year and an endowment to perpetuate scholarships in future years. For more information, stop by the Women’s Center in the Moody Learning Center, Room 177B or call 210-733-2299.
