EDGE Sumobot Competition at SAC July 28
Fuels Students’ Interest in Engineering

WHAT:
EDGE Sumobot Competition

Early Development of General Engineering (EDGE) is an eight-week summer program for 10th through 12th grade students interested in science, math, engineering or technology. EDGE is made up of 20 students, boys and girls, from seven school districts.

PHOTO OP:
Seven teams  face off with LEGO Mindstorms NXT robotics kits.
Student teams customize and program their robots and the winner is determined in a double elimination round by pushing the competitor out of the ring.

WHEN:
Tuesday, July 28
1 p.m.

WHERE:
San Antonio College
1300 San Pedro Ave., 78212
Chance Academic Center, ground floor near vending machines
(building located on SAC main campus,  enter W. Myrtle from Main Ave.)  Parking in Lot 19 or in garage.

WHY:
The robotic competitions increases the students’ interest and motivation to pursue engineering as a career.  This is done by allowing them to experience the enjoyment of using their creativity, imagination, and technical and physical skills to design and build a machine (robot) that can successfully perform the required tasks.    This is the essence of engineering.  This activity increases each student's skills and abilities in many areas; e.g., design, construction, programming, troubleshooting; problem solving; teamwork, interpersonal relations, leadership, and communications.

WHO:
Engineering Instructor Klaus Bartels serves as judge and coach for the robotics competition.
