Art Installation to Open Oct. 13 at San Antonio College

SAN ANTONIO, TX (Sept. 17, 2009) – San Antonio College Department of Visual Arts will open “Air into breath,” an installation by artist David Meyer at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 13 in the Visual Arts Technology Center (VATC).    A reception will follow in the VATC Gallery.  All events are free and open to the public. The exhibit runs through Dec. 19.

Meyer creates beautifully fragile and visually compelling installations, focused on the transcendental aspects of nature, using materials that have ranged from suspended gold leaf to microbial growth on a variety of surfaces.  His pieces challenge audiences to draw upon prior knowledge—learned paradigms, language use, sensory experience — in order to unravel the work’s meaning, or to question if, in fact, any conclusions are reliable.

“Air into breath” is a work created from more than 300 thin, parallel strips of vinyl equally spaced and suspended on an aluminum frame.  Resulting in a series of inverted arches that vary in length according to the surface area of an object, the installation produces a reverse topography.

Meyer earned his Master of Fine Art degree from the University of Delaware, where he is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Art.  Over the past two decades Meyer’s work has appeared in more than 70 solo and group exhibitions across the United States. He is also the recipient of several prestigious awards, grants and commissions, most recently, a Visiting Artist residency for the Hellenic International Studies in Arts program in Paros, Greece, and public commissions for the Oklahoma Tribal Monument (1996) and the Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial (1996).

The VATC is located at 950 Lewis St. on the San Antonio College campus, (at the corner of Dewey Street).
