EDGE Students Put Bridges to a Strength Test

Area High school students competed Tuesday, July 7, in the EDGE program’s annual Bridge Design, Construction, & Testing Competition. The winning team was e.e.l. Seven teams vied for the best bridge designation using paper (20 sheets max), 50 Popsicle sticks, glue, and four foam support blocks. The winning bridge managed to hold 8 kilograms of weight before it buckled.  Adjunct engineering instructor Klaus Bartels oversaw the competition in the Chance Academic Center. This is the seventh year that EDGE  (Early Development of General Engineering)  has been held at SAC. Some 20 students from seven area school districts are participating.  EDGE will conclude July 30 with graduation at McAllister Auditorium.
