Frederick Julius Tips IV, 18, from Alamo Heights High School
“I came to Gateway to excel in my studies. At my high school I felt like I wasn’t being taught properly and that the learning structure was completely different than my learning style. At Gateway there is a lot more one-on-one help, and the instructors are there to help. My study habits have improved drastically since starting here in January, by doing research projects and other group projects where people are relying on me to get the job done. At Gateway I chose to pursue a career in agriculture, and my resource specialist, Chris, has been here to support and to help me move along in my courses.”
Mariah Pena, 18, from Stevens High School
“I started Gateway in spring ’09. I come from, and I needed Gateway because I was a year behind in high school. I hated high school, I hated the fact I wasn’t surrounded by higher standards that I needed to push me through high school. I was born in Tennessee; I am one of five kids and have been living with my grandparents for 12 years. Gateway is a big help to me.”
