Play Information:
This wild epic celebrates the mad obsession and ambiguous triumph of Christopher Columbus. The charming Italian mariner moves through the nightmare of life - he loves, he struggles against authority and stupidity, and he confronts the wondrous and terrible fruits of his obsession.
He is brought to judgment before the inquisition for his sins of lechery and pride. Kings, queens, mermaids, dead sailors, lovers, princes, fools, and even madhouse inhabitants haunt and taunt the compromised hero.

This play, commissioned for the 500th anniversary of Columbus's first voyage, is rich in language, action, character and humor as it explores the consequences of exploration, discovery, madness, and creation.
