San Antonio College Program Receives
$25,000 Grant for Mi CASA Scholars

SAN ANTONIO, TX (May 1, 2009) – San Antonio College’s Programs & Services for Women & Non-Traditional Students has received a $25,000 grant from the Greater Texas Foundation through its Community College Scholarship Program.

The money will be used to provide 2009-2010 scholarships for Mi CASA Scholars, part of the Mi CASA Program (Career Advancement & Self-sufficiency Assistance) that was started last year to serve low- to moderate-income residents who live in the area surrounding San Antonio College.

Dr. Mary Helen Vera, department chair, said the program will award 20 scholarships of $1,250 each for leadership and mentoring training.  “We hope to develop grassroots leaders for the community.”

According to Vera, the program has been very successful and students continue to do well.  In addition to doing well academically, their active and enthusiastic outreach and mentoring efforts are the major reason for our success with this program,” she said.
