SAN ANTONIO, TX (Aug. 24) – The Senior Summer program at San Antonio College, now in its 10th year, is an opportunity for newly graduated high school seniors to earn up to seven college credits. The program offers classes in math, sociology, U.S. history, English and reading. This year the program partnered with the National Center for Postsecondary Research (NCPR) at Columbia University, which will track students for three years and publish program results.
The students came from Edgewood, Northeast and North Side ISD. Among those attending were:
Jesus Tijerina is a 2009 Robert E. Lee High School graduate who is attending SAC this fall. Tijerina plans to study architecture and drafting: “The thing I liked most was it (the program) helped me to transition to college. I feel ready for college.”
Ramiro Esquivel, a graduate of Navarro Academy (a magnet school in SAISD) plans to study accounting and become a CPA. “It opened me to little things I can use to improve my grades… It was a great college experience, different from high school,” Esquivel said.
Nelly Monreal is a 2009 Edison High School graduate who is now enrolled at Palo Alto College. She is also a graduate of the 2008 Summer Bridge program at SAC. Monreal especially like the math tutoring that she received during the Senior Summer program. “Math tutoring helped me pass the course,” Monreal said.
Senior Summer is part of SAC’s Division of Evening, Weekend and Distance Education.
Senior Summer Program students show off their $400 stipend checks.
