SAN ANTONIO, TX (Oct. 12) –TRiO/Student Support Services Project (SSSP) at San Antonio College has been awarded $23,000 in supplemental grant aid from the U.S. Department of Education to better serve 400 low income students who may be first-generation-in-college students, and/or students with some form of disability. To qualify for the funds, students must be attending SAC or be active members of the SSSP at SAC.
SSSP is designed to assist students in reaching their academic goals of graduation or transferring to a four-year institution. The program provides academic counseling, tutoring, mentoring, exposure to academic and cultural events, and also opportunities for book /laptop lending.
SSSP participants will receive the supplemental grant aid as a result of their accelerated participation in the program, grade point average, Pell grant eligibility, and enrollment status. Students may use the direct aid on expenses that help them to reach their academic goals such as childcare, transportation or household necessities.
“The program helped me to realize that there were other students like me, scared, lost, and unsure of where I was going,” said former SSSP member and 2007 SAC education graduate Lucia Gatica.
“It (SSSP) helped me stay on track for graduation and provided me with the strength and resources to become the first graduate in my family of 12,” she said. Gatica is working toward her bachelor’s degree in Mexican-American Studies and Sociology.
SSSP at SAC is limited to 400 with new students accepted every semester as space becomes available. Wynette Hadnott Keller is director of the Student Support Services Project.
