SAN ANTONIO, TX (June 30) – This year 14 students from area high schools participated in the 25th Urban Journalism Workshop (UJW) at San Antonio College. The summer workshop culminated in an awards ceremony June 26 at the Koehler Cultural Center.

Four students were awarded scholarships at the ceremony:
Katherine Sanchez, Senior, Roosevelt High, received the Regina Montague Scholarship and an ACCD Scholarship;
Judson High graduate Keri Clark and Alena Ramirez, a Johnson High graduate, each received ACCD scholarships; and
Linda Manzanares, Senior, Lee High School, received the Express-News scholarship.
The UJW is a Dow Jones Newspaper Fund (DJNF) workshop that utilizes a college level curriculum and encourages students to pursue a career in journalism. Workshop sponsors also include the San Antonio Express-News, Canon, Dallas Morning News, Beaumont Enterprise, San Angelo Standard Times and Texas State University.
According to Linda Shockley, DJNF Deputy Director, the SAC workshop has produced more writing and photography competition winners than any others among the 28 national workshops. This year the SAC nominees for the national DJNF competition are Krystal Barcenez (writing) and Maribel Molina (photography).
Special presentations were also made at the end of the ceremony honoring SAC faculty Marianne Odom, Tricia Buchhorn and Irene Abrego.
“We are serving San Antonio’s youth,” UJW director Abrego said. “Our intent is to give young people an opportunity to experience the possibilities in this field.”
Students are recruited based on an interview that requires writing samples, teacher recommendations and an interest in journalism. Student writers, editors and photographers produced a 12-page “You SA” newspaper. Since its inception in 1985, the summer workshop at SAC has awarded $93,000 in scholarships.
