7th Annual SAC Book Fair Celebrates Writing
and the Imagination
 
The 7th Annual San Antonio College Book Fair, a free family-oriented festival celebrating books, writing, and the imagination, will be held Saturday, April 6, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in the campus mall near the Gym and Planeterium, climaxing a week of literary activities at the college. Book Fair

The Book Fair, April 6, will feature presentations by five authors of children’s and young adult books. Also, 40 Texas authors from as far as El Paso, Arlington, and Houston who will be available to discuss and autograph their books. There will be book vendors, publishers, children’s crafts, book characters (Wild Thing, Madeline, Jesse Bear, Hank the Cowdog, and Pig), a moon bounce and caterpillar crawl, balloon animals, a DJ, live music by Charlie Wood and St. James Gate, the San Antonio Street Dance and Drum Co., and free T-shirts while they last. Readings and workshops are scheduled as follows:

Children’s Tent: 11-11:30 a.m.: Jane Bauld, Texas in Bloom: Wildflower Guide for Children and Journey of the Third Seed; 12:30 - 1 p.m. Jane Bauld’s creative writing workshop for children; 1:30 -2 p.m. Becky Chavarria-Chariez, Magda’s Tortillas and Magda’s Piñata Magic.

Young Adult Tent: 11-11:30 a.m.: Debra Winegarten, Katherine Stinson: The Flying Schoolgirl, 12:30 - 1 p.m.: Barbara Elmore, Breathing Room, Crookwood, and Saviors of the Bugle; 1:30 - 2 p.m.: Melinda Rice, Lone Star Heroines, a series of historical fiction for young readers, Lone Star Ladies: A Travel Guide to Women’s History in Texas.

Book Fair Week Activities, April 1-4

All weekday readings and book signings, except the Poetry Slam in McAllister Auditorium, will be held in the Visual Arts & Technologies Building, Room 120, and are free and open to the public:

Monday, April 1, 10-10:50 a.m.:

Cynthia Leal Massey and Ito Romo will discuss their fiction. Massey has published two novels:
Fire Lilies, a multi-generational saga about a northern Mexican upper-class family torn apart by the Revolution of 1910, and The Caballeros of Ruby, Texas. Romo has published a cycle of interlocking stories titled El Puente/The Bridge, in which the Rio Grande turns a crimson red.

Tuesday, April 2, 7-8:30 p.m.:

A Poetry Slam in McAllister Auditorium is open to the public and will feature ACCD students competing for cash prizes by reading and performing their poetry before a panel of judges.

Wednesday, April 3, 12-12:50 p.m.:
Jan Jarboe Russell, Express-News columnist who has covered Texas politics and culture for more than 25 years, will read from and discuss her book Lady Bird: A Biography of Mrs. Johnson. Amazon.com reviewer Wendy Smith says, “Russell paints a fascinating portrait of Johnson — a far tougher and shrewder woman than the dutiful image she presented as first lady in the 1960s . . . ”

Thursday, April 4, 12:15-1:30 p.m.:
Carol Coffee Reposa, Judith Infante, and Margie McCreless Roe will read from their poetry. Reposa has published her poetry in journals and two books At the Border: Winter Lights and The Green Room. She won second prize in the Blue Unicorn Poetry Contest, was twice nominated for the Pushcart Prize, and received two Fulbright/Hays Fellowships to study abroad. Infante, who has taught writing workshops for Gemini Ink, has published her poetry in journals and anthologies, including Noise of Dreams and This Tree is Older than You Are. Roe's poetry has appeared in many publications, including the anthology Keeping Company, and she plans to publish her first book Flight Patterns this fall.
