SACs Intensive GED Prep Helps Students Prior
to New Requirements
|
| A new test required to earn a Graduate Equivalency Degree (GED) will be
mandated by the Texas Education Agency, effective January 1, 2002, to reflect
the new skills now expected of high school students. However, students still
have an opportunity to take the current GED test, and they can enroll in
a special fast-track test preparation course developed by the
San Antonio College Continuing Education and Workforce Development division.
These courses prepare students for math and writing skills or for the full GED skills, offered during the day and evenings, with instruction available in both English and Spanish. The GED Prep class schedule for just math and writing skills ($50 for each) taught in both English and Spanish is: October 22-November 2: 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. November 5-16: 6 p.m.-10 p.m. November 19-December 4: 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. The full GED Prep class schedule (for $125), taught in both English and Spanish, is: October 22-November 16 (weekdays): 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. or 6 p.m. - 10 p.m. October 27-November 25 (weekends): 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. (English) or 6 p.m. - 10 p.m. (Spanish) People who earn a GED outperform at least one-third of traditional high school graduates, and one of seven high school graduates earned the diploma by passing a GED test, according to Anelia Luna, course coordinator. She added that more than 95 percent of U.S. employers consider GED graduates the same as traditional high school graduates. GED graduates include Bill Cosby, Dave Thomas (founder of Wendys), Deleware Governor Ruth Ann Minner, and U.S. Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell.
