McAllister Photographs Unveiled in Ceremony at SAC
 
WHAT: • Photographs of Walter Williams McAllister Sr. and his son Walter Williams McAllister Jr. will be unveiled in a ceremony in the foyer of McAllister Auditorium, followed by a reception.

• San Antonio College will honor the father and son who were instrumental to the development of the college. President Loland and Edith McAllister will speak.

BACKGROUND
:
• Walter Williams McAllister Sr. (1889-1984)
—Attended the German-English School on South Alamo (which later became the original location of San Antonio College), and graduated from University of Texas at Austin with an electrical engineering degree (1911). Married Leonora Elizabeth Alexander in 1913. Children: Elizabeth, Walter Jr., Gerald.

—Founded San Antonio Building & Loan Association, later San Antonio Savings (1921); appointed by President Eisenhower to chair the Board of Federal Home Loan Bank 1953-56; served as Mayor of San Antonio (1961-71); oversaw completion of Highway 281N named in his honor; founded San Antonio Union Junior College District with James Otis Loftin in 1945 and was chairman of the College District Board (1945-60); Purchased first tract of land on San Pedro for San Antonio College (1946); McAllister Auditorium was named for him (1956).

• Walter Williams McAllister Jr. (1918-1988)

—Attended University of Texas at Austin and St. Mary’s University; married Edith Scott (1940). Children: Walter Williams III, Taddy Jo Ellen, Reagin Scott,
Eloise Edith.

—President & CEO of San Antonio Savings Association (1953-76) and chair (1976-86); Chairman of the Board, American Founders Life Insurance Co. (1966- 80); Vice Chair of the national Savings and Loan Foundation (1976-80); created & developed branch banking in grocery stories (mid-1950s); appointed to College District Board (1960) & served by election through 1980 as board member then as Chairman; oversaw land acquisitions enabling San Antonio College and
St. Philip’s College to expand to their current boundaries.
