SAC Selected for NEH Grant
|
| The Community College Humanities Association (CCHA) has announced that
San Antonio College is one of 14 community colleges nationally to participate
in a project to strengthen humanities education for future teachers, funded
by a $242,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Palo
Alto College is the only other Texas community college selected to participate. These colleges are to be congratulated [for succeeding] in a highly competitive selection process, said David A. Berry, CCHA executive director and professor at Essez County College in New Jersey. He added, The teacher preparation programs they will develop strong in literature, history, philosophy and other humanities disciplines will enhance the capabilities of community colleges to assume leadership roles in meeting our nations current teacher shortage, and doing so by stressing excellence in humanities scholarship. The colleges will each have a three-member team that will attend national teacher preparation conferences and receive mentoring assistance from experienced humanities and education community college faculty. Each college will develop national teacher preparation models of collaboration between humanities faculty and education faculty to ensure humanities are central to community college programs that recruit and educate future teachers. The accomplishments of the 14 colleges will be broadly disseminated to stimulate replication by other colleges throughout the country. The project is being conducted in cooperation with the American Association of Community Colleges and Phi Theta Kappa international honors society. For more information on the project, contact Co-Director Diane U. Eisenberg at (301) 652-1901. |
