Radin is Named SACs Outstanding
Former Student
|
| The Honorable Sara Kleban Radin, who has had a distinguished career in
the practice of law and in her efforts to promote gender equality in the
courts, has been selected as the 2001-2002 Outstanding Former Student of
San Antonio College. She will be recognized at the San Antonio College Commencement
ceremony on May 18 at 10 a.m. in Laurie Auditorium at Trinity University. After more than 20 years in private practice, Judge Radin was one of the first women appointed by the Governor of California to the Los Angeles County Superior Court, where she served for 16 years, in addition to serving as Pro Tem on the Court of Appeal. In her years on the bench, Judge Radin successfully conducted hundreds of settlements. She was appointed by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of California to serve on the task force on Gender Bias in the Courts and on the Commission on Judicial Performance, which oversees the states judiciary. She was also appointed by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and served as Special Master in a hearing brought before the Commission of Judicial Performance. After retiring from the bench in 1993, Judge Radin started a new career as a private judge handling mediations, arbitrations, and other forms of alternate dispute resolution. She attended San Antonio College 1940-1942, then studied at Trinity University. After a summer job at the Eastman Kodak Chemistry Lab in San Francisco, she transferred to the University of California at Los Angeles, where she earned her B.A. degree. She used the math she had learned at San Antonio College in her work in the Engineering Department at Lockheed during World War II. She then studied law in the evenings at Southwestern University in Los Angeles, where she earned her J.D. degree. Judge Radin is a former President of the Santa Monica Bar Association and a charter member of the California Women Lawyers Association. She has received numerous honors, including Judicial Officer of the Year, Southwestern School of Law, 1994; Family Law Judge of the Year, Beverly Hills Bar Association; Woman of the Year, Santa Monica YWCA; and the Annual Status Award, American Association of University Women. My education at San Antonio College was excellent, said Radin, who added that her receiving a scholarship was like a miracle that made higher education possible. This was the beginning of my interest in math, she said, adding, If it hadnt been for San Antonio College, I wouldnt have gotten to where I am now; it was the basis for my education at other colleges. |
