SAC & NEISD Partner in Parent
Academy
|
| The San Antonio College Continuing Education and Workforce Development
Division is partnering with the North East Independent School District (NEISD)
to offer the Family Specialists Parent Academy, designed to promote
parents involvement with their childrens education at the elementary
school level. The 87 parents in the program will graduate May 17 at 10 a.m. in a ceremony at Roosevelt High School, with San Antonio College Enrollment Management Director Manuel Flores as keynote speaker and Dr. Richard Middleton, NEISD Superintendent, presenting students with certificates. The college will award a Certificate of Completion and Continuing Education Units (CEUs) to the parents for completing at least 80 percent of the academys 10 two-hour sessions, offered September - May. The ceremony comes after the final class on Higher Education Opportunities, taught by San Antonio College Counselor Anna Gutierrez on May 15, 9:30 a.m. at San Antonio College. The session also includes a guided tour of the college. This is an opportunity for parents to help their children succeed in school and also to serve as role models by learning how to continue their own education, said Steven D. R. Sparks, Continuing Education Program Manager and liaison for the Parent Academy, which is coordinated by Sue Moran, NEISD Director of Compensatory Education. The other academy sessions, taught by NEISD teachers, administrators, and counselors at different elementary school locations, include the following topics: Pre-Kinder/Kinder Activities, Pre-Reading Activities, Reading Fundamentals, Mathematics Made Easy, Basics of Composition Writing, Knowledge and Skills for Science, TAAS Test Interpretation, American Red Cross Till Help Arrives, and Crisis Prevention Intervention (behavior management). |
