SAC’s Distance Ed Degrees, Northeast Campus Are Approved by SACS

Pending several minor clarifications, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) has approved San Antonio College’s offering of classes at the Northeast Campus as well as the college’s offering of associate of arts and associate of applied sciences degrees via distance education (i.e, by telecourse, Internet, and videoconference).

“SACS requires that colleges obtain approval for substantive changes, such as whenever they offer at least 50 percent of their required courses in an alternative manner,” said Mrizek, director of planning and budget, who added that the Northeast Campus and degrees by distance education meet that description.

The good news came from James T. Rogers, executive director of SACS’ Commission on Colleges in an October 18 letter to Dr. Robert Zeigler, executive vice president. Rogers was responding to prospecti submitted by Mrizek for the Northeast Campus and Helen Torres, director of distance education, for distance education degrees.

The clarifications required by SACS are an explicit statement that evaulation results are used for improvement at the Northeast Campus and data on student services available to distance learning students “who access the curriculum via the Internet,” according to Rogers.

Rogers noted the visit by SACS to reaffirm San Antonio College’s accreditation will occur in 2006 and that the distance education degree programs will be further examined then, as a part of the scope of the reaffirmation.
