SAC Students Donate Cell Phones
to Aid Domestic Violence Victims

This morning, members of the Students Involved in Free Enterprise (SIFE) organization presented more than 30 cell phones, donated by the San Antonio College community, to Carolyn Washington of the San Antonio Police Department’s Victim’s Advocacy Section. The phones will be given to the national Call to Protect Program, which refurbishes them, provides 911 access and access to local battered women’s shelters, and distributes them to victims of domestic violence.

“The cell phones were donated by members of the SAC community of faculty, students, and staff and were collected by members of SIFE,” said SIFE President William Gaskins. He added that the presentation is in coordination with National Make a Difference Week, a campaign sponsored by USA Weekend Magazine in partnership with Points of Light Foundation.

Also present at the presentation were San Antonio College President Vern Loland, Executive Vice President Robert Zeigler, SIFE Faculty Advisor Charles Hunt, SIFE Public Relations Coordinator Claudia Dodge, and representatives of the San Antonio Police Department, Victims of Violent Crime, and the Battered Women’s Shelter.

SIFE is a non-profit organization working in partnership with business and higher education representatives to help college students apply their education to social situations outside the classroom. The students are involved with a variety of outreach and community service projects designed to teach the principles of the free enterprise system.
