High School Seniors Can Enroll in SAC’s Senior Summer Program

High School seniors are invited to enroll in San Antonio College’s Fourth Annual Senior Summer Program, which begins in June 2002 and runs for six weeks.

The program gives high school seniors a head-start on college by enrolling in a specially-designed program in which they can take up to seven hours of college courses after high school graduation and prior to the regular college fall semester. The college-credit courses can be transferred to any college, and students are encouraged to continue their higher education.

“There are a lot of scholarships and grants available for students,” said Javier Vargas, program coordinator, who added, “Last year, we gave out $395,750 in grants and scholarships for students to attend the program.”

The Senior Summer Program makes the transition from high school to college more painless by grouping the recently graduated high school seniors together into their own sections. In addition, students take a Student Development class, which helps them fine-tune their test-taking, study, and time management skills.

The program enables students to be tested, advised, and registered at their high schools, so they don’t have to come to the college to register.

Vargas noted that the program has grown from 64 students the first year to 146 students last summer. Of that 146, as many as 120 students continued their education at San Antonio College by enrolling for the Fall 2001 semester.
