Jesse Treviño Wins AACC Outstanding Alumni
Award
|
| Internationally renowned artist Jesse Treviño has been awarded
the 2002 Outstanding Alumni Award from the American Association of Community
Colleges (AACC), according to association President and CEO George Boggs.
San Antonio College President Vern Loland nominated Treviño for the
recognition, which was awarded this year to 11 outstanding community college
alumni from around the nation who will be honored at the AACC annual conference
in Seattle on April 22. Congressman Henry B. Gonzalez was the only other San Antonio College alumnus to receive the award. Nationally, some recipients of the award in recent years include Maureen Dunne, Rhodes Scholar; R. Bruce Merrifield, 1984 Nobel Prize in Chemistry; Silvestre Reyes, U.S. Congressman; Dick Vermeil, head coad of the Kansas City Chiefs; Rich Karlgaard, publisher of Forbes Magazine; and Jon Nakamatsu, gold medalist, Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Treviños artistic career began as early as age 6, when he won an art contest at the Witte Museum, then after graduating from Fox Tech High School he pursued his education with a scholarship to the Art Students League in New York. However, he had to decline a scholarship to study art in Paris when he was drafted, then he fought in Vietnam and lost his right hand in battle. Treviño studied at San Antonio College in 1969-1971, where he learned to paint again and later continued his studies at Our Lady of the Lake University and UTSA. He was selected Outstanding Former Student of San Antonio College for the 1991-1992 academic year. His painting Mis Hermanos, a portrait of his brothers, hangs in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian National Museum of American Art in Washington, D.C, and his work may also be found in the collections of Prince Charles of England and the Anheuser-Busch, J.C. Penny, Lockheed Martin, and Dr. Pepper USA corporations. Treviño also gained widespread fame for his nine-story ceramic tile mural Spirit of Healing, commissioned by Santa Rosa Health Care of San Antonio. He is currently working on another outdoor tile mural, titled Our Lady of Guadalupe Velador, for the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center. Smithsonian Curator Andrew Connors said of Treviño, By remaining faithful to his community, he has remained faithful to himself and to his art. His paintings therefore are intensely sincere reflections of not just Jesse Treviños America, but all of our America. For more information, contact Carolee Youngblood, CEY Marketing, at 408-6845. |
