Crump and Hernandez Receive Wall St. Journal Awards
|
| San Antonio College students Dierdre Crump and Cynthia Hernandez have
received the Wall Street Journal Student Achievement Award, given annually
by the Business Department faculty to recognize students attitude,
image, individual growth and potential, and academic achievement. Both Crump
and Hernandez have demonstrated a strong commitment to public service. Dierdre Crump, who graduated in the top 10 percent of her class at Roosevelt High School, was selected for Youth Leadership San Antonio and also served with the color guard. She has traveled to the Vladimir region of Russia every summer since 1999 and the winter of 2000-2001 to help orphans. I am involved in providing them with clothing, shoes, food, toiletries and other needed items, said Crump, who added that one day she would like to adopt children from Russia. She currently works with Urban Ministries After School Kare, with plans to complete her associates degree in business management, earn her bachelors and masters in counseling and social work at UTSA, and eventually do child and family counseling in the U.S. or Russia. Cynthia Hernandez, who graduated from Lubbock High School, has been president of the Public Administration Club for three semesters. In this role, she has been involved with community service projects to assist less fortunate children in the San Antonio area. She also initiated the Henry B. Gonzalez Public Service Scholarship for SAC students majoring in public administration. Hernandez has earned her AA degree in public administration and a labor studies certificate from San Antonio College. She is now enrolled at both SAC and Texas A&M University Kingsville on the Palo Alto campus. She plans graduate degrees in human relations and public administration, with a career goal of working for the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission as a human resources specialist. Wall Street Journal Award recipients receive an individualized paperweight, a years subscription to the Wall Street Journal, and his or her name on a department plaque on exhibit in a display case.
