Zeigler Is Named San Antonio College
President
|
| Dr. Robert E. Zeigler, Executive Vice President, was unanimously named
President of San Antonio College, effective in August 2002 with a contract
renewable in 2004, by the Alamo Community College District Board of Trustees
at their regular June board meeting Tuesday, acting on Chancellor Robert
W. Ramsays recommendation. Zeigler was one of three finalists forwarded by the colleges Search Committee to Ramsay for his consideration. The presidential search began after President Vern Loland announced his retirement in January. I am proud to recommend Dr. Robert Zeigler as the next president of San Antonio College. His experience, education, and proven track record will take San Antonio College to the next level in serving the educational needs of our community, said Ramsay. Loland said, I applaud the appointment. Dr. Zeigler has served this institution admirably for 30 years, understands it well, and in particular understands its culture that is so important for a new president. He added, Knowing that this institution, which I have learned to love so much, is being left in capable hands is a great satisfaction to me. I am honored by this appointment, said Zeigler. I appreciate the confidence shown in me by the board, Dr. Ramsay, the screening committee, and my colleagues at San Antonio College. I look forward to serving the college and our students in my new role as president. After serving in the U.S. Navy, Zeigler attended San Antonio College. He earned his B.S. and M.A. degrees in American history and government from Sam Houston State University and his Ph.D. in American history from Texas Tech University, where he was named Outstanding Graduate Student. He taught history at Weatherford College then started his teaching career at San Antonio College in 1971. He has taught on the history faculty, served as Chairman of the Faculty Senate, and held various administrative positions, including Coordinator of the Telecourse Program, Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs, Interim President, and Executive Vice President. He received the Faculty Service Excellence Award from his colleagues, the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development Excellence Award, and the Outstanding Leadership Award in 2001 from the Texas Community College Instructional Administrators for his leadership, creativity, innovation, and influence on issues at the state level. He is a member of the San Antonio Founder Lions Club, served on the board of the Edgewood Independent School Districts Fine Arts High School, participated in the Community College Consortium Leadership Training, and is currently a board member and executive committee member of the San Antonio Education Partnership. Known for his openness to new ideas, Zeigler oversaw and nurtured the development of the citys first Internet courses, which now number over 100, more than any college in the city. During Zeiglers tenure as Interim President, the college was successfully re-accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. English Department Chairman Alex Bernal said, Dr. Zeigler is an excellent leader with the ability to work with faculty, deans, and district administration in order to accomplish outstanding projects for San Antonio College. San Antonio College has an enrollment of more than 21,000 students, the largest college in San Antonio, the largest single-campus community college in Texas, and among the largest community colleges in the country. |
