SAC's New Gerontology AAS Degree First
in the City
|
| Beginning this spring semester, San Antonio College will offer the only
associate's degree in Gerontology in the City of San Antonio and also one
of only four such degrees in Texas, according to the new Program Coordinator
Yvonne M. Lozano, M.S.G. "The ever-increasing older population has produced a demand for better-trained and skilled professionals to work in the field of aging," said Lozano. She explained that Gerontology is the study of the aging processes and individuals as they grow from middle age through later life. She added that the 36-hour Gerontological Studies degree program, recently approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, can lead to a bachelor's degree program, professional school, or entry-level careers assisting the aging population in a variety of areas. Some of the many fields a Gerontology degree leads to include social work, occupational/physical therapy, mental health technology, nursing, administration, home health, activity therapy, art therapy, public administration, urban planning, retirement planning, counseling, recreational therapy, and medicine. Lozano earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Behavioral Science from the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor and a Master of Science in Gerontology from Baylor University. She has had a variety of experiences with public and private organizations, as an instructor, program therapist, program manager, administrator, consultant, private practitioner, and most recently a facility investigator for the State of Texas. She has licenses as a social work associate and marriage and family therapist. For more information about the Gerontological Studies program and how to enroll, call Lozano at 210-785-6130. |
