SAC to Offer New Certificates & AAS Degrees

San Antonio College will offer new certificates and four new Associate in Applied Sciences (AAS) degrees this academic year. An AAS degree program in Computer Security Administration and two certificates in Teacher Assistant will be offered this fall semester, and pending Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board approval AAS degree programs in Gerontology, Emergency Management, and Teacher Assistant will be available in the spring.

"The Emergency Management and Gerontology AAS degree programs will be the first to be offered in Texas," said Betty Larson, Dean of Professional and Technical Education. Students do not have to be in the police force or fire department to enroll in the program.

An AAS program in Computer Security Administration provides training in the skills and knowledge necessary to maintain security for a computer network. Developed with the help of an Advisory Committee of industry professionals, it is one of the first of its kind developed at the community college level. Larson noted that the degree program will be a pathway for students in the Alamo Community College District's newly established Information Technology and Security Academy.

"San Antonio is rapidly becoming a center for computer security activities, as demonstrated by the number of computer security companies in the local area and the establishment of the Center for Information Assurance and Security at UTSA," said Larson.

The Teacher Assistant program was developed at the request of the San Antonio Independent School District and is based on two current certificates. This will help teacher assistants meet the new requirement, effective 2006, that they have an AAS or two years of college. The program is also being used by other school districts to meet the training needs of their teacher assistants.
