SAC's Industrial Electronics Degree Is Relevant
Preparation For Some Toyota Job-Seekers
San Antonio College's Industrial Electronics Program provides appropriate training for some of the skills Toyota employees will need at their new San Antonio facility, according to Phil Strottner, Program Coordinator.

"The Industrial Electronics Program is relevant preparation for students," said Strottner, who said the program includes work with AC/DC, solid state, digital electronics as well as specialty courses in Robotics, Programmable Logic Controllers, and basic Industrial Electronics. He added, "The education would enable an individual to install, maintain, repair, and modify electronics/industrial control equipment in many manufacturing environments, one being an assembly line used in vehicle production."

First starting in the Fall 2001, the Industrial Electronics Program joined two other Electronics AAS program specialties that have been offered for more than 20 years: Communications and Computers. People who already have a San Antonio College degree in electronics would only have to complete the Industrial specialty courses to be awarded the Industrial degree, said Strottner. Additional courses may be required if the degree is more than six years old.

Someone just starting the two-year program would be able to complete the degree in time for the Toyota plant's projected opening in 2005-2006, said Strottner. He noted that Industrial Electronics and Programmable Logic Controllers courses will be offered in the Fall 2003, and the Robotics will be offered in Spring 2004. Students can begin general academic courses in the Summer 2003.

Editors' Notes:
1) Phil Strottner and faculty member Dave Johnson (733-2883) are available for interviews in English, and faculty member David Mochen (733-2883 or dmochen@accd.edu), who developed the Robotics and PLC courses for the Industrial degree, speaks fluent Spanish and also is available for interviews.

2) San Antonio College offers many other programs that are also relevant to prospective Toyota employees, which we will be highlighting in coming weeks, including Engineering Technology, Japanese, Business, Management, Haz-Mat certification, Occupational Health & Safety, Computer Information Systems, and Job Skills Training.
