SAC Students Donate Cell Phones
to Aid Domestic Violence Victims

This morning, members of the Students Involved in Free Enterprise (SIFE) organization presented more than 100 cell phones, donated by the San Antonio College community, to Carolyn Washington of the San Antonio Police Department's Crisis Response Team, Victim's Advocacy Section, and Alfred Martinez, police officer.

The cell phones were donated by members of the SAC community of faculty, students, and staff and were collected by members of SIFE. The phones will be refurbished, activated, and donated to the Battered Women's Shelter. They will be used to enable victims to have emergency contact with 911 and their local shelter.

"Students are taught to give back to the community through mentoring programs, teaching children the free enterprise system, working with individuals of low income backgrounds, and victims of domestic violence to help better the quality of life that they live," said SIFE faculty sponsor Val Calvert.

Also present at the presentation were San Antonio College President Robert Zeigler, SIFE Faculty Advisor Charles Hunt, SIFE President Mark Sewell, Vice President Marelyn Ramos, and club members Angela Barbosa, Robert Write, Donna Grant, Rachel Pierce, Max Rodriguez, Mark Hernandez, Jarrett Nunn, Phillip Feist, Henry Mendez, and Danil Martinez.

SIFE is a non-profit organization working in partnership with business and higher education representatives to help college students apply their education to social situations outside the classroom. The students are involved with a variety of outreach and community service projects designed to teach the principles of the free enterprise system.
