Child Development to Hold 30th Anniversary Fiesta & Reunion

WHAT:
* The San Antonio College Child Development Center will hold a 30th Anniversary Fiesta and Reunion, as a part of the Week of the Young Child observation.
* Anyone who has ever had children in the Center is invited to attend the celebration, which includes food and activities for children, according to Cathy Castillo, Chairperson of the Child Development Department.

WHEN/WHERE:
* Thursday, April 10, 3:30-6:30 p.m.

* Child Development Center, 210 W. Ashby St. (one block east of the Koehler House).

BACKGROUND:
* The Child Development program was funded with a grant and became a department in 1972. A 1981 grant provided at an off-campus site childcare and training for women who had been on welfare.
* In 1985, the Child Development Lab Center was the first of its kind in San Antonio to be accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.
* The Center moved to the San Antonio College campus in 1986, including a lab program for Child Development majors and a childcare program, whose teachers were mainly graduates of the program. The program moved again to its current site on W. Ashby St. in 1993 and added an infant room.
* In 1994 teachers with an AAS degrees, earned by most in the program, staffed all children's rooms. A 2001 grant made it possible to create an additional infant room and model, state-of-the-art care for younger babies.
* The Center's capacity is 89 children, who range from six weeks to five years of age.
