SAC Women's Center Receives $341 Grant

The Women's Center and Adult Re-Entry Program at San Antonio College were recently awarded a Self-Sufficiency Grant from the Texas Workforce Commission in the amount of $341,160 to be used through Oct. 2003.

The one-year grant will be used to provide technical training to 120 participants in the medical administrative assistant field through the center's Connections Program.

"We are excited to have the opportunity once again to offer this wonderful program to our community," said Dr. Helen Vera, Women's Center coordinator. "We know this program changes lives."

The Connections Program is a medical clerical training program that prepares participants with skills and job readiness training. Job placement and internship opportunities are available for participants who complete training. To be eligible, participants must have a high school diploma or GED and must be eligible for food stamps or Temporary Aid for Needy Families (TANF).

The Connections Program began in 2001 with the support of a Self-Sufficiency Grant. More than 100 women and men have been trained and placed in employment with employers such as University Hospital System, Barrio Comprehensive Services, and Santa Rosa Hospital.
