SAC Economics Students, Faculty & Staff Will Work on Two Habitat for Humanity Houses

What:
* San Antonio College students, administrators, faculty, and staff will work together building two houses as part of the Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio's construction of a local neighborhood.

* About 40-50 students taught by Susan Spencer, Economics Associate Professor, will participate as a Service Learning classroom project. (Service Learning students voluntarily perform community service activities that are relevant to their classroom studies. They are required to keep a journal and make a report on their experiences.)

* President Robert E. Zeigler and his wife Mary will provide lunch at the site this weekend.

Background:
* Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio, Inc., is an ecumenical Christian non-profit housing organization that works with families whose income is generally 25-50 percent of the area median income. Families accepted in the program purchase a Habitat house for 0 percent interest mortgage. Community volunteers build the homes in partnership with the families, who are required to invest a minimum of 300 hours of "sweat equity" building their house and those of their neighbors.

When & Where:
* Saturday, September 27, and Saturday, October 11, 8 a.m. - about 3:30 p.m.

* The homes San Antonio College people will be working on are located at 5435 and 5431 Castroville Road.

* Directions from downtown:

Take US 90 West; take Callaghan Road exit; turn right on Callaghan Road; turn right on Zupan Lane (first road across from Wolff Stadium). The site will be a half block on the right. (The Castroville and Zupan Homes are directly behind each other.)

* Parking: limited to street parking on surrounding streets. Access Castroville road homes from Zupan Road site.
