SAC Celebrates Hispanic Heritage
 
San Antonio College will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a series of talks, performances, films, and literary readings, Sept. 16-26. One of the highlights will be an appearance by author Oscar Casares, who will read from his book Brownsville: Stories in McAllister Auditorium on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. For more information, call Emma Mendiola at 733-2805.

Sept. 16-26:
"Windows to Our Past: A study of the windows and arches of the missions in San Antonio," photographic exhibit by Leonard Ziegler, college photographer, Moody Learning Center & Loftin Student Center.

Sept. 16:
9:25-10:40 a.m. "Ana Maria del Carmen Calvillo, 1765-1856, 19th Century Ranchera," by Nora E. Rios McMillan, History Professor, Visual Arts & Technology Center (VATC), Room 120.

11 a.m. Opening Remarks, by President Robert E. Zeigler. Grito Contest, Loftin Student Center Fiesta Room.

11:30 a.m. Ballet Folklorico of San Antonio, Loftin Student Center Fiesta Room.

12:30 p.m. Mariachi Palomino, Palo Alto College, Loftin Student Center Fiesta Room.

Sept. 17:
9 a.m. "Voices from Texas," by documentary filmmaker Ray Santisteban, VATC 120.

10 a.m. "Latinos in the Legislature," by Trey Martinez Fischer, State Representative, District 116, VATC 120.

11 a.m.-1 p.m. Low Rider Show, outside the Loftin Student Center.

2-4 p.m. "My Hispanic Heritage," Essay Contest. Meet at Gonzalez Hall, Room 100. (Contact Liz Ann Aguilar, English Assistant Professor, at 733-2519, and Janice Clayton, English Professor, at 733-2512.) 

Sept. 18:
10:40 a.m. "Come and Take It Day," by filmmaker Jim Mendiola. Myth, history, and heavy metal collide in this South Texas tale of dreams, schemes, and revenge, VATC 120.

10 a.m. Latinas in Love:  A Modern Guide to Love and Relationships, by Valerie Menard, journalist, author, and relationship expert. Menard is an Austin freelance writer, a former editor of Hispanic Magazine, and advice columnist for Moderna. Copies for sale, VATC 120.

Sept. 22:
10 a.m. "Tejano Heritage: Merging the Past with the Present," by Political Science Instructors Julie Alfaro and Fernando Piñon.

11 a.m. "The Bronze Screen," a film about the past, present and future of Latinos in the movies, VATC 120.

Sept. 23:
9:25 a.m. "Voices from Texas," documentary by Ray Santisteban, VATC 120.

10:50 a.m.-12:05 p.m. "The Mexican Americans," a film that explores the broad spectrum of Mexican culture north of the border, VATC 120.

Sept. 24:
9 a.m. Ray Sanisteban, documentary filmmaker, will discuss and show clips from his documentary "Voices from Texas." Sanisteban has produced and directed award-winning documentaries airing on PBS and is senior producer of "Visiones: Latino Arts in the United States," VATC 120.

10 a.m. Latino Read-In. Poetry and prose readings at an open mike. Loftin Student Center Fiesta Room.

1 p.m. Ken Rodriguez, San Antonio Express-News columnist, VATC 120.

6 p.m. San Antonio College Latin Jazz Band, directed by Alice Gomez, McAllister Auditorium.

7 p.m. Oscar Casares, author of Brownsville: Stories, will read from this debut collection of his stories. Casares holds an MFA degree from the University of Iowa and was awarded a fellowship from the Iowa Writers Workshop, the Dobie Paisano Fellowship from the Texas Institute of Letters, and the James Michener Award through the Copernicus Society of America. Copies of the book will be for sale. McAllister Auditorium.

Sept. 25:
9:25 a.m. "Representation of Mexican Women in the San Antonio Light," by Juanita Luna-Lawhn, English Professor, VATC 120.

1:40 p.m. "Curandismo" (folk healing), by Juan Antonio Chavira, Ph.D., J.D., VATC 120.

Sept. 26:
