SAC to Hold September 11 Memorial

| MEDIA ADVISORY WHAT: * The San Antonio College community will hold a memorial ceremony to honor the heroes and the victims of the September 11 tragedy. * A procession of three student groups will move from the Candler Physical Education Center down the campus mall to the grassy area in front of the Moody Learning Center. The procession also will include a patrol car, an ambulance, and fire truck used for training. * Three wreaths will be laid at the grassy area in front of the Moody Learning Center. * After the sounding of a siren from the college's new fire truck, there will be a minute of silence. There will be no speeches or presentations. * Hundreds of American flags will be distributed among the participants at the ceremony as well as larger flags placed throughout the area. * Bagpipes will be played during the procession and after the ceremony. WHEN/WHERE: * Wednesday, September 11, 2002, 9:15 a.m. * San Antonio College campus, beginning at the Candler Physical Education Center WHO: * President Robert E. Zeigler will preside at the ceremony and will be joined by administrators, faculty, staff, and students. * The three groups in the procession will be student representatives of 1. the Emergency Medical Technicians, Fire Science Academy, Law Enforcement credit and non-credit students; 2. students currently or previously in the military; and 3. representatives of the Student Government Association. BACKGROUND: Students participating in the procession enrolled for training as police officers, fire fighters, and Emergency Medical Technicians after the September 11 tragedy. Part of their decision to enter these professions was in response to the tragedy. This is the first class in these programs since September 11.
