SAC to Hold 9th Annual Multicultural
Conference
|
| The 9th Annual Multicultural Conference will be held April 22-24, featuring
presentations, a fiction-writing workshop, and literary readings on the
theme "Art, Film and Nature: Expanding Multiculturalism." All
events except the final luncheon are free and open to the public and will
be held in the Visual Arts and Technology Center, Room 120, unless otherwise
note. The opening event begins Tuesday, April 22 at 6:30 p.m. in McAllister Auditorium, featuring an Introduction by Moumin Quazi (University of the Incarnate Word) on expanding multiculturalism's boundaries, and Keynote Speaker David Redles (Cuyahoga Community College) on "Eco-Apocalypse: Historical Reflections on the Earth's End." On Wednesday, April 23, there will be a series of presentations by Teresa Morris and Clare Norris on Toni Morrison's writing (9-9:50 a.m.), Jan Lencznarowicz on Polish immigrants in Australia, and Amy Gilmour on Terry Tempest Williams (10-10:50 a.m., and book-signings), Amy Ipina on Américo Paredes and Langston Hughes, Diane Bertrand on "Trino's Tree: Roots and Wings" (11-11:50 a.m., and book-signings). Also on April 23, Carol Coffee Reposa and Marian Haddad will read from their poetry (12-12:50 p.m. and book-signings), Cynthia Leal Massey will read from her novel Caballeros of Ruby, Texas and Mike Burton will discuss Black Elk Speaks (1-1:50 p.m. and book-signings). A Writing Workshop titled "Nurturing Roots of Fiction: Characters as Fertilizer," will be conducted by San Antonio novelist Diane Bertrand (2-3:30 p.m.). The day's events will conclude at 7-8:45 p.m. with an evening of literary selections by Norma Cantu on "Poetry y mas: A Reading of excerpts from Canicula and Current Work," Yvette Benavides on "Poetry reading from Imprinting," Jane Focht-Hansen on "Basic Nature," Joy Kennedy on "Blasts and Repercussions," and Juanita Luna Lawhn on "Canciones de mi pasado/Songs of My Past." Book-signing in the lobby. On Thursday, April 24, morning presentations will include Philip Lampe on "Culture and Nature," Richard Moon on Louis Owens' Wolfson, and Leslye Friedberg on the comedy of George Herriman (9:25-10:40 .m.), Francie Black on Our Spiritual Nature and Our Interconnectedness in All Life, Moumin Quazi on Pastoralism as orientalism in Shelley's Frankenstein, and Laura Wright on Coetzee's The Lives of Animals. At 12:15-1:45 p.m., a luncheon featuring Jo LeCoeur on "Nature's Constant Voice" will be held at The Bright Shawl, 819 Augusta St. (Reservations required; call 733-2491 or 733-2539 by April 16 for tickets.)
