SAC & NEISD Continue Parent Academy Partnership

The San Antonio College Continuing Education and Workforce Development Division is partnering again this year with the North East Independent School District (NEISD) to offer the Family Specialists' Parent Academy, designed to promote parents' involvement with their children's education at the elementary school level. San Antonio College held the final session at McAllister Auditorium this week.

Speakers included Dr. Robert Zeigler, President; Dr. Ruben Whitney, Counselor; Sue Moran, Director of Compensatory Education at NEISD; Steven Sparks, Continuing Education Program Manager; Ruben Torres, Dean of Continuing Education & Workforce Development; and Dr. Jim Lucchelli, Chairperson of Counseling & Services for Special Populations. Counselor Edie Huff conducted a college tour.

Approximately 216 parents have enrolled in the program, which is designed to help their children succeed in school and to help the parents serve as role models by learning how to continue their own education, said Steven D. R. Sparks, Continuing Education Program Manager and liaison for the Parent Academy. The college will award a Certificate of Completion and Continuing Education Units (CEUs) to parents completing at least 80 percent of the academy's 10 two-hour sessions, offered September - April.

NEISD teachers, administrators, and counselors teach academy sessions at different elementary school locations on subjects that include Pre-Kinder/Kinder Activities, Pre-Reading Activities, Reading Fundamentals, Mathematics Made Easy, and Basics of Composition Writing, among others. The last session taught at San Antonio College focused on higher education opportunities for both parents and their children.
