Pianist Roger Wright to Perform at SAC

Acclaimed pianist Roger Wright will perform a one-hour program at McAllister Auditorium on Saturday, March 15, 7:30 p.m., followed by a reception hosted by The Piano Gallery. This will also be the official inauguration of the San Antonio College Steinway Concert Grand Piano.

Roger Wright was one of two American pianists in the 2001 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. His many prizes include First Prize of the Frinna Awerbuch International Piano Competition, which led to his debut at Carnegie Recital Hall in New York. He received the Silver Medal at the 1997 San Antonio International Piano Competition, as well as a special prize for the Best Performance of the Commissioned Work. He was a prizewinner in the Esther Honens Calgary International Piano Competition, performing with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra in Rachmaninoff's Third Concerto.

His performances have been broadcast across Australia on ABC radio, Canada on CBC radio, in New York City on WQXR radio. He has given concerts in the United States, Sydney, Dublin, and Pretoria. He currently resides in Los Angeles, where he pursues a Doctorate of Music at the University of Southern California.

The Washington Post said Wright displays the characteristics of "the true romantic pianist, a pianist who can unlock the secrets of the great romantic composers." The St. Petersburg Times said Wright "impresses for his magisterial command, abundantly rich tone and . . . for making music with a heart."

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students with ID. Proceeds will benefit San Antonio College Music Scholarships and the San Antonio International Piano Competition. For more information, call 733-2731.
