San Antonio
College's Scobee Planetarium and the San Antonio Astronomical Association
will co-host "Howl at the Moon" observing sessions at
the San Antonio College Observatory and telescopes in an adjacent
parking lot on Saturday, Oct. 23, 7-10 p.m. and again on Wednesday,
Oct. 27, 8-11 p.m., when there will be a lunar eclipse.
For the Oct. 23 session, "the public is invited to a close-up
viewing of the craters and mountains of the Moon," said Bryan
Snow, Planetarium Coordinator. He added, "The phase of the
Moon will be particularly suited for highlighting some of the most
spectacular craters and shadows and the lunar mountains."
Four days later on Oct. 27, the public is invited to view a total
eclipse of the Moon, which Snow described as "one of the most
beautiful sights in nature."
"This eclipse happens when the Moon's motion takes it through
the Earth's shadow and the normally bright full moon is dimmed to
a coppery red glow," said Snow, who added that the eclipse
is safe to view and that anyone outside can see it from 9:30-10:45
p.m.
Parking is free, located one block east of San Pedro Ave. off W.
Park. If it is cloudy or raining, the session will be cancelled.
