SAC Journalism Students Win More Awards

San Antonio College Journalism-Photography students continued their tradition of winning top awards for the weekly newspaper The Ranger and The Fourth Write magazine in state competition with both two- and four-year institutions of higher education.

On March 28, The Ranger was also selected Best Non-daily College Newspaper in Texas by the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors (TAPME) at the group's annual convention in Abilene. The Ranger was also selected Best Overall Newspaper in Division 2, and The Fourth Write placed fourth in General Magazine at the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association convention April 2-3 in Austin.

"The newspaper was the cleanest in regard to Associate Press style, leads and readability," said the Texas Intercollegiate Press judges. TAPME Judge Tommy Miller, California State University at Fresno, said, "Excellent reporting, writing, editing and packaging. The quality journalism across the board is what set this newspaper apart from the keen competition."

The Ranger also placed Third in Sweepstakes, and students won 17 individual awards from the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association. First Place awards went to Raymond Jordan for General Column, Fred Tabares for Illustration, Rachel Rangel for News Photo, John Lauricella for News Story, and Tiffany Itz for Picture Story. Second Place awards went to Emily Foley and Chris Castillo for Headline Writing, and Third Place awards were presented to Kyla Perry for News Feature Story and Ricky Espinoza for News Story.

Fourth Write winners included First Place awards for Robert Zertuche and D.A. James for Picture Story. James also won Second Place for Feature Photo-Color and Honorable Mention for Action Photo. Honorable Mentions went to Chris Castillo for Cover Design and to Emily Foley for Single Issue.

Instructors Irene Abrego and Marianne Odom and Lab Tech and photo adviser Tricia Buchhorn are the primary advisors for the publications, and Chet Hunt is department chairperson. For more information about the Journalism-Photograph Program, call 733-2870.
