The public is invited to attend a free "Saturn
Night Live" observing session at the San Antonio College Observatory
and using telescopes in the adjacent parking lot on Saturday, January
31, from 6 p.m. - midnight. The event is co-hosted by San Antonio
College and the San Antonio Astronomical Association, which is donating
the telescopes for the occasion.
"On December 31, 2003, Saturn was the closest to Earth and
the brightest it's been in the sky for 30 years," said Bryan
Snow, Coordinator of San Antonio College's Scobee Planetarium.
He added, "The views at the end of January will be just as
good, but the planet will be higher in the sky and easier to see
earlier in the evening. Views through a telescope will easily show
the spectacular rings surrounding this, the second largest of planets.
Families are encouraged to bring their children to witness this
magnificent sight."
Parking is free and available in the lot next to the Observatory,
which is located one block east of San Pedro Ave. off of W. Park.
The observing session will be cancelled if it is cloudy or raining.
