The Grand Opening and Dedication of the new Jean Longwith Radio, Television and Film Building at San Antonio College will take place on Friday, April 8, 2 p.m. at the building, which is located at the corner of North Main Ave. and West Courtland Pl.

Sonny Melendrez, San Antonio radio personality and alumnus of the RTVF program, will be Master of Ceremonies.  Speakers will include Dr. Robert E. Zeigler, President; Dr. J. Terence Kelly, Chancellor of the Alamo Community College District; Terry Tackitt, Chairman of the RTVF Program; and Arch Campbell, alumnus and entertainment reporter and movie critic for NBC 4, WRC-TV in Washington, D.C.

Following the remarks, a portrait of Ms. Longwith will be unveiled, and the building will be open to the public for an Open House.

"Jean Longwith taught us to do what we loved, love what we did, and to always deliver our talent with excellence," said Melendrez of his former teacher.  Arch Campbell, Emmy-winning reporter and critic for NBC's WRC-TV in Washington, D.C., said Longwith "was a once-in-a-lifetime teacher whose vision enriched San Antonio College and the broadcast industry."

The new 30,000 square foot Jean Longwith Radio, Television and Film Building will include a multi-track recording studio (with Pro Tools TDM with Control 24), individual postproduction suites (with Pro Tools LE and Avid Express DV), KSYM-FM radio station (with a studio, production rooms, and performance studio), news lab (with CNN News Source in the Classroom), two television studios, a video lab, two audio labs, a computer writing lab, a copy writing and advertising classroom, and a lecture/presentation theatre.  Indoor and outdoor common areas for students are also included.

The late Jean Longwith, Professor Emeritus, helped establish the Radio, Television and Film program during her career at San Antonio College from 1964 to 1983.  She initiated, designed and developed the curriculum and served as the general manager for the college radio station KSYM 90.1 FM, the first community college radio station in Texas.

Among many other accomplishments, Longwith initiated the San Antonio Chapter of the International Television Association and served as its first president.  She also served as president of the San Antonio branch of the American Association of University Women and Chairman of the San Antonio Cable Television Advisory Committee.
