In traditional African cultures, the mask, costume, and resulting parades and celebrations were created to draw attention to societies organized for the benefit of their own members -- in a way, what "insurance" is or what fraternal societies or co-operatives are, providing help to those members in need. Each society had its own masks, costume designs and related regalia, with some of these items imbued with religious or shamanistic powers. Looking at the masks and costumes from an artistic point of view, and considering their function within their own cultures is the topic of the lecture.
