SAC Journalists Receive Awards

The San Antonio College student newspaper The Ranger, The Ranger Online, The Fourth Write magazine and individual students have been honored for their excellence by several professional organizations.

The Ranger, edited by Ricky Espinoza and Raymond Jordan, was selected Best Nondaily newspaper by the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors (TAPME) and Best Nondaily in Texas and Oklahoma by the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Region 8.

The Fourth Write magazine, edited by Elaine Marsilio, was selected Best Student Magazine published once a year in Texas and Oklahoma by the SPJ.

>The Ranger Online, edited by Espinoza and Nicole Lessin and designed by Web administrator Pete R. Ortega, was selected by the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) from among 142 entries as one of 21 finalists in the 2005 Online Pacemaker competition.

The TAPME judges said, "This newspaper not only covers the various campuses, includes (college) governance and local elections, but also the communities that surround the campuses." The judges noted that the publication has a lot of useful information, looks good, and has good
photo features, reporting, and speak-out column.

Other finalists for the Online Pacemaker competition include The Hoya from Georgetown University, The Harvard Crimson, The Daily Tar Heel from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, the Daily Bruin from the University of California at Los Angeles, among others. The only other community college publications to be named finalists are The Collegian from Tarrant County College and the Weekly Hornet from Fullerton College. Finalists will be honored Oct. 29 in New Orleans, and Pacemaker winners will be announced.

Last fall, The Ranger won the Pacemaker Award (for print publications) for the 10th time, given to the top two- and four-year college newspapers in the nation by the Associated Collegiate Press and the Newspaper Association of America Foundation. Espinoza and Jordan
>were editors of the winning issues.
