Expected Program/Unit Learning Outcomes:

Students who successfully complete the Fire and Arson Investigator AAS or Level II Certificate will be able to:

1. Explain the rule of law as it pertains to arrest, search and seizure procedures and their application to fire investigations.

2. Recognize and interpret fire scenes common to various types of fires.

3. Describe the chemistry of combustion and the relationship of atoms, elements, compounds, and organic compounds on fire.
4. Explain the nature and behavior of fire including the effects of heat.
5. Explain and identify the combustion properties of liquids, gases and solid fuels.
6. Identify and explain electrical causes of fires,
7. List and explain the procedures for lifting fingerprints, evidence collection and preservation.
8. List and identify the make-up and use of incendiary devices, explosives, and bombs.
9. List the procedures for documenting fire scenes, including sketching, photography, and report writing.
10. Analyze fire-related deaths and injuries and describe methods of documentation.
11. Identify the techniques for interviewing and questioning suspects and subjects.
12. Explain the role of the fire investigator in courtroom proceedings including courtroom demeanor and testifying.

13. Identify and list the sources and technology available for fire investigations.

14. Identify the different types of laws and explain their basic differences.

15. Analyze federal, state, and local laws, which regulate or influence emergency services

16. Explain the role and purpose of national codes and standards concerning their legal influence.

17. Identify the Significant Historical Events that contribute to modern criminal justice systems.

18. Define the role of the criminal justice system.

19. Define the major philosophies of modern criminal justice systems.

20. Classify crimes into traditional categories.

21. Identify the Four (4) Traditional Components of the Criminal Justice System

22. Explain how our current federal/state government came into being.

23. Explain the Organization of federal, state, and local law enforcement.

24. Explain the role of the courts in the CJ system.

25. Explain the common roles of our Corrections System.

26. Explain the difference between the US CJ System and other world systems.

  • Students who complete courses in any Fire Science Program must pass each course with a minimum grade of 70%
  • Problem based learning

    To ensure that the Fire & Arson Investigation program/unit reaches these goals, our faculty members pursue the following outcomes, each expressing what our students should know and be able to do.

  • Teach content in a chronological order.
  • Maintain and make available a library of professional publications for student research.
  • Provide information on the most recent technological advancements in the study of arson investigation
  • Inform the students of job opportunities that are available them upon completion of the curriculum

 

    To achieve these program/unit outcomes, faculty members employ the following strategies:

  • Develop and file a common lesson plan for each course.
  • Develop a Standard Operation Guideline to ensure that all of the students receive the same quality of education.
  • Ensure strict adherence to state mandated curriculum and guidelines.
  • Provide counseling and tutoring when needed.
  • Keep the students informed on their academic progress
