Basic Firefighter – Level I Certificate

 

Expected Program/Unit Learning Outcomes:

Students who successfully complete the Fire Science AAS Degree or Basic Firefighter Certificate will be able to:

 

  • Demonstrate the proper use, maintenance, and inspection of various tools and safety equipment used in the performance of fire fighting activities.
  • Describe and Identify the hazards that fire fighters may encounter during fire, rescue, or hazardous materials operations.
  • Identify the different types of building construction encountered during fire operations
  • Describe the communications systems used in the fire service.
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform basic rescue techniques in vehicle extrication, high angle, and confined space operations.
  • Identify and describe the procedures used in the process of fire cause and determination.
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform a pre-fire plan.
  • Demonstrate the ability to effectively search a building under fire conditions and locate the fire.
  • Explain the theoretical principles of the chemistry of fire
  • Describe the components of a water distribution system
  • Through mathematical computation, determine water flow requirements for a community
  • Identify and describe the different automatic fire alarm and extinguishing systems
  • Describe the principles of hazardous materials awareness and operations.
  • Identify the various types of hazardous material storage and transport containers.
  • Develop a tactical fire attack plan and describe the strategic elements of the plan.
  • Explain the concepts of the incident management system and describe the components of the system.

  • Student Initiated Study Groups
  • A Minimum of Three Regularly Scheduled Counseling Sessions with Each Student During the Semester
  • Daily Quizzes and Regularly Scheduled Examinations
  • Workbook Projects
  • Student Surveys
  • Students who complete courses in any Fire Science Program must pass each course with a minimum grade of 70%

 

    To ensure that our program/unit reaches these goals, our faculty members pursue the following outcomes, each expressing what our students should know and be able to do.

 

  • Teach content in a chronological pattern.
  • Maintain and make available a library of professional publications for student research.
  • Provide information on the most recent technological advancements in the fire service field.
  • Inform the students of job opportunities that are available them upon completion of the curriculum

 

    To achieve these program/unit outcomes, faculty members employ the following strategies:

  • Develop and file a common lesson plan for each course.
  • Develop a Standard Operation Guideline to ensure that all of the students receive the same quality of education.
  • Ensure strict adherence to state mandated curriculum and guidelines.
  • Provide counseling and tutoring when needed.
  • Keep the students informed on their academic progress
