Fire Science ProgramOur Mission The Faculty and Staff of San Antonio College are dedicated to meeting the educational needs of the community. The college is committed to providing both academic and technical education to support the diverse career opportunities available to the members of the community. Due to the extraordinary circumstances that have developed in regards to public safety and homeland security, the mission of the Fire Science Technology Program has become a dynamic process. Based on the belief that a well-educated workforce is an effective workforce, the Fire Science Technology Program is dedicated to providing quality education and training to those individuals who wish to serve their communities and fire fighters and emergency managers and promote professionalism in the fire service through education. The mission of the Fire Science Technology Program is to provide the San Antonio and South Central Texas area with highly trained and qualified personnel in the Protective Services fields of Fire Protection, Fire Arson Investigation, and Emergency Management Administration. The Fire Science Technology Program is committed to the enhancement of the status of the Fire and Emergency Management professions through higher education by offering Associates of Applied Science Degree in Fire Science, Fire Arson Investigation, and Emergency Management Administration. Program Goals Promote professionalism by increasing access to career advancement and employment through higher education. Explore career opportunities in fire related industries Maintain pro-active standards with current industry practices through training and education. Program Outcomes Continue working toward a Bachelor of Science Degree in Fire Science Occupational Education through Wayland Baptist University. Apply for advanced certification thorough the Texas Commission of Fire Protection. Utilize the Fire Science Degree to obtain employment or eligibility for career advancement. Program Description The Fire Science Program reflects the assessed need of the community for careers in the fire-related industry, fire service and fire service management. The curricula are designed to prepare experienced and volunteer firefighters wh6/19/06mance and prepare for higher level positions in the fire protection fields. In addition to course work in the fire prevention, investigations, firefighting tactics and strategies, fire administration, and hazardous materials, the Fire Science Technology Program offers disaster control through the Emergency Management Program and assures that the student will receive up-to-date instruction that reflects current practices in the fields of fire protection. Other students may benefit from this instruction of initial career preparation, career development, and for foundations leading to university transfer credit. The fire science degrees and certificates are part of the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) certification process. Instruction is provided by certified and experience career firefighters under the guidance of and advisory committee composed of community leaders and administrators from local fire departments. |
