Associate in Applied Science Degree
The Human Services Associate in Applied Science has 3 specialty options.
The Human Services Program Offers three specialty options leading to an AAS Degree. Certificates are also offered in Drug/Alcohol Abuse Counseling, Substance Abuse Counseling, and Addictions Counseling: Criminal Justice Specialization.
Specialty A, Drug/Alcohol Abuse Counseling is for those students pursuing licensure as chemical dependency counselors. Students completing this degree fulfill the basic requirements set by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) for pursuing licensure as a chemical dependency counselor. Program Learning Outcomes/DAAC AAS Degree
Specialty B, Addiction Studies is designed for individuals who are currently licensed by DSHS as chemical dependency counselors in Texas. Individuals enrolled under this specialty option can receive 18 hours of advanced placement credit toward the AAS degree. Contact the HS Program Coordinator for details.
Program Learning Outcomes/Addiction Studies AAS Degree
Specialty C, Counseling Psychology is designed for students who wish to pursue training in the counseling area but are not necessarily pursuing licensure as a chemical dependency counselor. Students wishing to seek out positions as a mental health technician or similar field, may want to consider this degree option.

Continuing Education
LCDCs, LPCs, LMFTs, and other counseling professionals may obtain licensure renewal credits through the Human Services Program. Each course completed through continuing education is worth 45 CEU Hours.
Formal 2+2 agreements as well as informal agreements have been established with Our Lady of the Lake University, St. Mary's University, Texas State University, Texas A&M University-Kingsville, and Wayland Baptist University. For more information, please contact the Human Services (HS) Program Coordinator.
Students must meet with the HS Program Coordinator before enrolling in any HS Program courses. Students enrolling in any of the HS program degree/certificate options must meet all current basic skill pre-requisites. See the current college catalog and course descriptions for additional information, including graduation competency requirements.
Many students utilize the previously mentioned programs, especially the Associate in Applied Science Degrees, as a base toward pursuing higher-level degrees. Transferability of courses to colleges and universities varies widely. Students should contact the specific institution they would like to attend to determine exactly what courses and credit hours will be accepted and in what areas (electives or core courses). Degrees and certificates in this program may be obtained through distance education.
