Catalog Description:
Education 1301 is designed for students who are considering teaching as a career. The course will focus on the requirements for coming a certified teacher in the state of Texas and serve as an introduction to and analysis of the culture of schooling and
classrooms. A 16 hour field experience in the public school setting is required.
Pre-requisites, co-requisites and other requirements: ENGL 1301 with a grade of C or equivalent score.

Teachers, Schools, and Society (Sadker and Sadker, 7 th ed.) with course CD-ROM
Instruction will consist of:
- Lecture
- Cooperative Learning
- Library/Internet Research
- Reflective Writing Experiences
- Field Experience
- Portfolio Development
Course Content:
- Unit One: Teachers and Students
- Unit Two: Schools and Curriculum
- Unit Three: Foundations
Learning Outcomes and Performance Objectives with their methods of measurement as used to determine the students’ mastery of those outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to demonstrate the following competencies on written assignments, major tests, and a departmental comprehensive final exam with 70% accuracy:
· identify the basic requirements for becoming a certified teacher in Texas; · identify the characteristics of effective teachers and schools; · analyze the impact of student diversity on the culture of schools and classrooms; · recognize the social forces that influence the curriculum; · identify the foundations of education in the U.S. (philosophical, organizational, financial, legal, and ethical)
Course requirements and grade computation.
College Requirements:
A written, comprehensive final examination, not to exceed two in a half hour in length, shall be given at the end of each semester for each course at the regularly scheduled time. Any exceptions to these requirements must be approved by the appropriate dean. Other examinations are given at the discretion of the instructor.
A student who must be absent from a final examination should petition that instructor for permission to postpone the examination. A student absent without permission from a final examination is graded “F.” Postponed examinations result in a grade of “I.” The final exam must be taken within 120 calendar days from the end of the semester or the grade automatically becomes an “F.” (San Antonio College Bulletin, Faculty Handbook - January 1995)Departmental Requirement & Method of Measurement:
Class participation, skill exercises, writing activities, application of efficient reading techniques on multiple reading, computer lab modules, available tutoring and departmental skills and vocabulary tests.
A minimum grade of 70 on the departmental final exam is required in order to pass the course Instructor Requirements: Percentage may vary according to instructor
The final course grade will be determined by:

- San Antonio College Attendance Policy: Regular and punctual attendance is required. A student absent for any reason is responsible for all work missed. Absences are recorded from the first day of class. A student absent the equivalent of two weeks of instruction, may be dropped by the instructor with a grade of “W.” Both tardiness and early departure from class are forms of absenteeism. The instructor establishes the policy with regard for each.
