Course Number: READ 0300 Title: Basic Reading and Study Skills I
Prerequisite(s): None
Hrs: ( 3 - 3 - 0 )
Description: Reading 0300, Basic Reading and Study Skills I, is a course for students entering San Antonio College with special reading needs. The objective of Reading 0300 is to help those students whose reading development has been delayed. Skills emphasizing word attack, vocabulary development, interpretation and evaluation of basic paragraph and story patterns, and study skills are stressed.




Course Number: READ 0301 Title: Basic Reading and Study Skills II
Prerequisite(s): A "C" or better in Reading 0300, teacher recommendation or equivalent placement score
Hrs: ( 3 - 3 - 0 )
Description: Reading 0301, Basic Reading and Study Skills II, is a course for students who do not have adequate reading and study skills for college level work. Skills emphasizing review, refinement and reinforcement of basic reading skills such as vocabulary development, comprehension, fluency, critical reading, and study skills are stressed.


Course Number: READ 0302 Title: Introduction to College Reading
Prerequisite(s): A "C" or better in Reading 0301, teacher recommendation or equivalent placement score
Hrs: ( 3 - 3 - 0 )
Description: Reading 0302, Introduction to College Reading, is a course for students who need to improve reading and study skill techniques appropriate for academic demands. Skills emphasizing the theory and mechanics of good reading, vocabulary, specific textbook comprehension, study skills in context, critical reading skills, and flexibility of reading rates are emphasized.




Course Number: READ 0303 Title: College Reading Skills
Prerequisite(s): A "C" or better in Reading 0302, teacher recommendation or equivalent placement score
Hrs: ( 3 - 3 - 0 )
Description: Reading 0303, College Reading Skills, is designed for students who need to improve reading effectiveness with college level textbooks. Skills emphasizing terminology, structure and content of general academic and technical subject matter are covered with a strong emphasis on critical reading and thinking skills.



Course Number: READ 1370 Title: Critical Reading and Reasoning
Prerequisite(s): A "C" or better in Reading 0303, teacher recommendation or equivalent placement score
Hrs: ( 3 - 3 - 0 ) Description: Reading 1370, Critical Reading and Reasoning, is designed for students who read at the college level. Critical reading and reasoning skills and advanced vocabulary skills are emphasized. It is suggested for college students majoring in reading intensive areas, business and professional people who recognize a need for greater proficiency in reading and reasoning skills, and other adults who may be preparing for standardized verbal exams.


 

COURSE NUMBER: EDUCATION 1301
Title: Introduction to Education
Pre-requisites, co-requisites and other requirements: ENGL 1301 with a grade of C or equivalent score.
Education 1301 is designed to provide students with an orientation to teaching as a career.  Students will explore and discuss foundations and current trends and issues in American education.  Additionally, the class includes a mentoring/tutoring component with K-12 students.

 


 

COURSE NUMBER: EDUCATION 2301
Title: Introduction to Special Populations
Prerequisite: EDUC 1301 with a grade of C or equivalent score.
This course enables students to explore their understanding of the wide range of diversity as it currently exists in school populations. Areas of differences addressed include language, gender, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and academic styles and intelligences. Students will explore strategies to facilitate learning within the context of diverse school environments. A fifteen-hour field experience with special populations in P-12 schools is required.
