1370)
Prerequisite(s): READ 1370 or equivalent score
Hrs: ( 3 - 3 - 0 )
Description: Education 1301 is designed to provide students
with an orientation to teaching as a career. Students will
explore and discuss foundations and current trends and issues
in American education. Additionally, the class includes
a mentoring/tutoring component with K-12 students.
Education
1301 is a 3 semester hour course which explores educational,
historical and current trends in education. Students have
the opportunity to mentor in area schools. Over 90% of the
students who mentor find the experience extremely rewarding.
A few, however, realize that teaching is not the career for
them.
The
primary purpose of the education program is to recruit and
support future educators. This is done in several ways.
Recruitment
efforts bring in counselors from surrounding 4 year schools,
both within Bexar County and out of Bexar County.
The
education program collaborates with area schools in promoting
and supporting teacher education initiatives such as:
CEDE-
The center for Educational Development and Excellence. Funded
by TEA, CEDE represented a unique collaborative venture with
area universities and had as its primary goal the improvement
of pre-service education.
Project
CoMET- Community Partnership for Collaboration, Mentoring
and Technology which has as its focus the pre-service/in-service
education, mentoring and professional development of future
and current teachers. This grant is administered by Our Lady
of the Lake and has as its members two community colleges
and six area school districts.
