The
Reading Department of San Antonio College serves approximately
4,500 students per academic year. Of those students, 14% are
black, 61% Hispanic, 18% are Anglo and 8% classify themselves
as other. Ninety-nine percent of the students are underprepared,
that is, not reading at college level.
The department strives to:
- Provide
innovation in instruction and services to meet the diverse
needs of the community's multicultural population.
- Give
all of the community's underprepared students the opportunity
to achieve success in college level courses.
- Offer
college level courses which will strengthen critical reading
skills and provide flexibility in reading.
- Meet
the community needs for a more literate workforce.
- Emphasize
excellence in teaching and learning by student participation
(facilitating learning).
- Base
our curriculum and instruction on careful, systematic and
patient study of how our students learn.
- Provide
an environment that fosters professional and personal growth
for faculty and staff.
